CASE STUDY | Argos | Retailer decks the halls with Tiger Trailers box vans

Argos, one of the UK’s leading digital retailers, serves 29 million in-store customers every year across more than 800 high street outlets, so the need for a reliable and efficient transport fleet is key to the company meeting its intense distribution schedule.

2017 saw Argos place its first ever order with Tiger Trailers, setting the manufacturer the challenge of supplying 76 box van single deck trailers in to its fleet before Christmas, when the company’s delivery demand reaches its peak.

  • Tiger designed each trailer with a reinforced rear frame that tapers in by two degrees, helping to protect against damage from loading bays
  • Each trailer will assist with the distribution of Argos’ 60,000 products nationwide
  • Efficient logistics is key for Argos as the company offers its 1 billion annual online visitors same-day Fast Track Delivery and free in-store Fast Track Collection

With the pressure on to impress, Tiger worked closely with the team at Argos to design a driver-friendly trailer that both looked good and was tough enough to withstand the retailer’s intensive delivery operation. Particular focus was given to drive down costs throughout the life of the trailers, working on solutions to minimise potential downtime and ensure all repairs can be completed quickly.

“The timescale involved for the manufacture of these trailers was certainly a challenge, but Tiger really stepped up to the task, delivering the new additions in time to support our busiest period of the year. It’s a real testament to the team’s commitment to their customers.” – Dave Landy, Fleet Manager at Argos

The order was split equally between 13.6-metre and 12.2-metre trailers, all featuring a special tapered reinforced rear frame to help prevent against damage from loading bays. In a move designed to prolong the operational life of each trailer, Tiger also included steel and high-impact nylon protection to areas most prone to damage on the outside, as well as full length galvanised steel kick strips, rub rails, hardwood buffers and steel gussets to prevent any potential damage from cages inside.

“To seamlessly deliver these trailers into Argos’ fleet at their busiest time of the year was always going to be a challenge, but it was one which we met head on. We delivered everything as promised and the new trailers look fantastic.” – Steven Cartwright, Joint Managing Director, Tiger Trailers
