CASE STUDY | Howard Tenens | Dynamic double decks the perfect tools

Third-party logistics provider Howard Tenens has a long-standing relationship with Tiger Trailers, operating its trailers and rigid truck bodies across multiple customer contracts. However, for its contract with Toolstation, one of Britain’s fastest growing suppliers of tools and accessories, it decided bigger was better, placing an order for three double deck longer semi-trailers (LSTs).

  • Tiger designed the LSTs with a fixed deck over the step frame to provide dedicated space for abnormal loads
  • The aerodynamic sloping front roof helps to lower drag and reduce fuel consumption
  • The LSTs will stay in the fleet for seven years and will average 180,000km a year

The three 15.6m step frame double deck box van trailers were chosen to help Howard Tenens meet its customers’ growing delivery demands across the UK. Tiger’s design team worked tirelessly to nail down the specification to maximise load capacity and help improve operational efficiency.

“Two years ago we commissioned a standard double deck trailer from Tiger to trial in Toolstation’s fleet. The improvements in efficiency were notable, but since then the company has gone from strength to strength and the additional capacity of the LSTs became increasingly appealing. We knew the spec had to be perfect to get the full benefit of the 15.6m length, and following a detailed design consultation, Tiger worked hard to find the optimum double deck solution. These new trailers are proving really versatile – combining the ability to carry a diverse payload, with an increased number of cages.” – Richard Philpotts, National Fleet and Compliance Manager at Howard Tenens

The LSTs can accommodate up to 87 cages – 38 on both decks, with an additional 11 on the neck. The three-quarter length hydraulic moving deck is rated to seven tonnes, while a fixed deck has been incorporated over the step frame to house plastic piping and other abnormal loads, freeing up more valuable cage space. An on-board weighing device ensures every load is within the legal limits, while self-tracking rear axles offer improved manoeuvrability.

“These were the first purpose-built trailers designed specifically for Howard Tenens’ Toolstation contract. Our LST solution gave them a versatile and efficient double deck that has had a dramatic effect on the efficiency of their operation. For the right routes, it’s the perfect tool for the job.” – Darren Holland, Sales Director, Tiger Trailers
